Search medication by GTIN number

I’m working on a project for my learning development and would like to create a system that can read data from data matrix codes on medication packaging, I am aware that you can search medicines by code via the Code Lookup - dm+d browser site, but I would have expected this function to be available as an API so i can integrate it into my project!

any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Douglas,

You are right to expect an API for looking up medicines by their data matrix code (dm+d). The NHS Dictionary of Medicines and Devices (dm+d) is maintained by NHS England, and there isn’t an official public API explicitly advertised or currently available on our platform for this purpose.

NHS England Terminology and Classifications team’s recommended method for accessing dm+d is the NHS Terminology Server. It is a terminology solution available over the internet (Web API) designed to help healthcare IT systems speak the same language and make mapping codes between organisations faster and easier.

The following may also help with your project:

Also see dm+d introduction eLearning for more information.

If you need any further information/support, please contact the NHS Business Services Authority :

• For enquiries about changes or additions to dm+d data, Editorial Policy Content requests or to raise an issue with dm+d visit Dictionary of medicines and devices (dm+d) on the NHSBSA website

• For support, implementation and technical queries about the dm+d XML files, TRUD and for enquiries about the SNOMED CT UK Drug Extension email information.standards@nhs.net

• For queries relating to UK Medicines Terminologies Futures (development changes) work email nhsdigital.ukmeds@nhs.net.

Or via DataServicesSupport@nhsbsa.nhs.uk

Hope the above helps.

Thanks,

NHS England API Platform team
