Drop any general onboarding questions, threads or updates here.
At Onboarding drop-in, it was mentioned that Intelerad just published release notes about NIR? Did I catch that right?
Governance Updates
We’ve made a number of updates to the NIR Governance webpage, which are now live:
https://digital.nhs.uk/services/national-imaging-registry/governance
All sections will be useful to organisations (and their suppliers) onboarding to NIR, but the following may be of particular interest:
Clinical Safety Documentation
This section includes the NIR product-level Clinical Risk Management Plan, Clinical Safety Case Report and Hazard Log:
https://digital.nhs.uk/services/national-imaging-registry/governance#clinical-safety-documentation
Deployment Safety Responsibilities
This outlines the respective clinical safety responsibilities of suppliers and healthcare organisations when deploying NIR.
Essential Clinical Safety Templates
This section includes key deployment resources, including:
- Template DCB0160
- NIR Clinical Safety Guidance
- Handling of Duplicate Imaging Policy
Information Governance Documentation
Key IG templates are available here:

Guidance on completing your local Data Protection Impact Assessment is available here:
Organisations currently onboarding to NIR will receive a controlled copy of the NIR template DPIA emailed separately.
What is the consideration for the functionality of all the suppliers for their functionality to show to the end user the length of time of the record that they are querying.
Also how does the end user know if a queried Trust has a broken link at that point in time for that query?
Hi Ian, thanks for the question!
This is currently being looked at by the NIR Clinical Lead, Dr Joe Barnett. Just for reassurance, there is a clinical push for all imaging data to be made available by suppliers. The 1 January 2023 date is a compromise intended to maintain momentum towards go-live while the wider position is worked through with suppliers.
Per the usual process, we’ll be drafting a formal response to your question (which will cover the technical and information display element of your question), which will also be added to the NIR FAQs.
We’d also really welcome your involvement in the upcoming clinical safety drop-ins being organised by the Tiger Team Coordinator.
Watch this space - we’ll keep you updated as this progresses.

Hi Charlee,
Thank you for your assistance to get these particular questions formally logged.
As discussed whilst the temporal length of the record has an importance my main question was around how are users being notified of that temporal length for the organisation/s they are submitting a query too?
Even if every organisation eventually submits their entire record for query there will still be an asymmetry across the country in the timespan of that record.
The other aspect is how will the user be notified when there is a “loss of connection” to a given organisation so that there is no return of data for a given query? In relation to that specific scenario there will be many organisations that are receiving a query that will have have no record for the patient and the query return would identify that but that is different to a lack of return to the query especially if it is from an organisation that has a record for that patient.
I appreciate that the presentation of these scenarios may vary between commercial supplier but general guidance and a setting of expectations would seem useful following discussion.
